Citation Formatter

Format references in APA, MLA, Chicago, Harvard, and IEEE styles. Enter details manually or look up a DOI/URL.

How It Works

This tool formats bibliographic references according to five major citation styles. Enter source details manually or paste a DOI to auto-fill metadata via the CrossRef API.

  • APA 7th — Author-date format used in social sciences. Emphasises the publication year and uses hanging indentation.
  • MLA 9th — Author-page format common in humanities. Uses a "containers" model and italicises source titles.
  • Chicago 17th — Notes-bibliography style used in history and some humanities. This tool generates bibliography entries (not footnotes).
  • Harvard — Author-date system popular in UK and Australian universities. Similar to APA but with slight formatting differences.
  • IEEE — Numbered reference style used in engineering and computer science. References are numbered in order of appearance.

DOI lookup fetches metadata from the CrossRef public API. All formatting is done entirely in your browser — no data is stored or sent to any server beyond the initial DOI lookup.
